W.Y.E.S Can!

posted Nov 23, 2009 6:34 AM by Katie Gigliotti   [ updated Nov 24, 2009 6:00 AM ]

November 20th marked the end of the canned food drive held by the W.Y.E.S. special events committee.  The drive was held to benefit MESA and each grade level had a goal of 1,000 cans.  When it was all said and done, we exceeded our goal and with the generous support of the families of W.Y.E.S. the school collected over 3,000 items!!  5th Grade collected the most, ending up with 1, 222 items.  3rd grade came in second with 872 items and 4th grade with 808 items.  At each grade level, one student was recognized for donating over 200 items.  John Johnson (5th grade), Emily Woodward (4th grade), and Gaines Swink (3rd grade).  The winning grade level was awarded with an ice cream sundae party for the entire grade.  All students were given a goody bag for their contributions.  Congratulations to W.Y.E.S.  for donating and making life better for someone in need!  We are very proud of all of our students!  Also, a special thanks to the special events committee for organizing the food drive, collecting the items, promoting the event, and finally boxing up all the items to be sent.

Virginia Readers’ Choice 2009-2010

Each year, the Virginia State Reading Association sponsors the Virginia Readers’ Choice Awards Program. Ten noteworthy books (published within the last five years) are nominated by students, teachers, and librarians across the state. The program started in 1981.

To become a qualified voter, a participant must read at least four of the nominated books. In April 2010, students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite books. Titles are available at the Waverly Yowell Library. Some of the books may also be available at the Madison Public Library, through classroom book orders, or at a bookstore. Titles from the K-3 list will be used as read-alouds during library time so that all third grade students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite.

Please visit the Good Reads link to read more about Virginia Reader's Choice and the books involved.

4th Grade Visits the Frontier

posted Nov 12, 2009 5:03 AM by Katie Gigliotti   [ updated Nov 12, 2009 6:34 AM ]

On Tuesday November 3, 2009 the 4th grade students went on a totally free field trip to the Frontier Culture Museum in
Staunton, Virginia.  The perfect weather made way for the opportunity to visit a typical European farm and learn about the factors that caused many Europeans to immigrate to the New World .  Students were also introduced to a restoration of a 1740's American farm.  The students were very excited to see a baby calf and try their hand at chopping f ire wood among many other hands on activities.  They really got a sense for how life used to be and are now more appreciative of the technological advances we have in our time.  To read more about the frontier culture museum please visit http://www.frontiermuseum.org/

Red, Red, Red Ribbon Week

posted Nov 2, 2009 6:59 AM by Katie Gigliotti

October 26-30 was red ribbon week at W.Y.E.S.  On Monday, the students signed their pledge banners and received their red
ribbons.  Tuesday was wear red day and the school seemed to take on the appearance of the red sea.  Team day was Wednesday so students dawned their favorite team apparel.  Thursday was twin (or triplet) day.  Finally Friday marked the end of the event with a "wear what you want to be when you grow up" and staff and student talent show.  The students looked fabulous in their 'costumes' and the talent show was the first of hopefully many to come.  All in all, the week turned out to be a huge success thanks to the hard work of all the teachers and the participation from all the students!  Please enjoy the pictures!
