WYES Character Education Program

Waverly Yowell Elementary School has a comprehensive character education program.

1.    Our School Counselor, Mrs. Keys teaches monthly classroom guidance lessons incorporating the "Six Pillars of Character" by the "Character Counts" program.  Lessons are aligned with VSCA standards and the ASCA model.   The order of character traits is as follows:  Respect, Citizenship, Caring, Trustworthiness, Responsibility, and Fairness.

2.    This year’s School Counseling theme is YOU have the POWER to CHANGE the world!

3.    Incorporating a Super Hero theme students will be encouraged to identify their own “super powers.”  They will be encouraged to think about how they can use their own special strengths to contribute to our world.

4.    Every 6 weeks upon introducing the new character word teachers will be asked to pick 1 student from each class who is a “Super Hero” in that character trait.  These students will be recognized in a special way on the WYES video announcements.

5.     Students who exemplify good character traits are recognized in front of their peers at end of grading period assemblies and their pictures put on the character education bulletin board in the library.

6.    Throughout the school year special weeks are set aside to shine a spotlight on specific character education themes.  They are as follows:

·      Red Ribbon Week focuses on making good choices and leading a healthy lifestyle Oct. 27-31

·      Acts of Kindness Week focuses on how one simple act of kindness can impact another person and the whole community Feb. 9-13
